Welcome to Division 18!
Welcome to our class website! Please make sure to check back here frequently for upcoming events, class information, learning outcomes and to follow along with us as we wonder, explore and learn about the world around us. You can also see our Twitter updates with pictures of what we are doing in class.
I am really glad to welcome you and your child to my classroom this year. I believe that by all of us working together we can make this a very successful year for your child.
Your child will be bringing home a planner which will be used to keep you informed about our themes, the words and sounds students are learning, as well as upcoming events. It is a great tool for communication back and forth between us, therefore it is extremely important that it is signed and returned every day. Please let me know when your child will be away for an appointment, will be picked up early, if someone else will be picking up your child or any other news that may be relevant to your child’s learning or safety. Thank you for your attention to your child’s planner this school year.
Arrival: Children enter the school through the outside classroom door. I will meet the children at this door at 8:55 a.m.
Late Slips: If your child arrives late, please make sure that he/she reports to the office for a late slip.
Dismissal: All children will be dismissed through the same doors at 3:00 p.m. Please wait outside the door for your child. If you are late, or if another person is picking up your child, please inform the teacher or school.
Recess/Lunch: Children will be going outside unless there is a downpour. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Learning is hard work for the body and brain. To support your child’s success, we ask that parents pack a healthy snack and lunch. Your child is encouraged to bring a water bottle to school. Please label your child’s water bottle. We are a nut aware school. Please try not to send snacks that contain peanuts or tree nuts. Please sign out at the office when you are taking your child home for lunch, and sign in when your child returns to school. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Spare Clothes: Please place a pair of socks, underwear and pants (in case they get wet), in a Ziplock bag and leave it in your child’s back pack.
Indoor Shoes: It is not necessary to keep a pair of indoor shoes at school for the classroom, but its a great idea. However, if your child wears boots to school, please make sure that he/she has a pair of shoes to wear inside the classroom.
Special Helper: Each day a child will have a turn to be the special helper (V.I.P.). The helper will have the opportunity to share something special on this day (a book, a special collection, a model, an art piece, music, etc.). Each round of VIPs, we will have a new theme. When it is your child’s turn he/she will bring home the Show & Tell bag. I would like each child to come prepared to tell two things about their “surprise”.
Library: Our Library period is on Mondays. Mrs. Hignell is the Librarian. Students will have an opportunity to select a library book during this time. The students may keep this book for one week.
Gym: Our P.E. periods are Mondays and Thursdays. Mr. Maerov is our Gym teacher. He will teach us on Thursdays. Please ensure that your child is wearing comfortable clothes and running shoes on these days.
Parent Volunteers: If you are interested in being a parent helper please fill out the parent helper form, which will be sent home at the end of September (once a month, once a week, or occasionally). If you are unable to come and help in the classroom and would like to be involved from your home please call. All Parent Helpers must sign in at the office and pick up a visitor’s badge. Thank- you.
Scholastic Book Orders: I will be sending home a Scholastic book order form with your child each month. There is no obligation to participate in this activity but many parents and children have enjoyed this service. The books are reasonably priced and the selections offered appeal to young children. If you would like to place an order, please send your order and payment in an envelope or zip lock bag. Please write your cheque out to: Scholastic Canada. I appreciate your orders because we receive free books for the classroom.
I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to be your child’s teacher this year and look
forward to meeting each of you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.
